Three day eventer Sharon Hunt is ranked among the top 50 event riders in the world. As part of Team GB, she won a bronze medal at the last Olympic games and is a regular face at the World Equestrian Games and large events, such as Burghley and Badminton. Sharon writes a weekly blog for H&C TV and here, she tells us her best and worst…
My best event…
“The best event ever has to be the Olympics – it was the best thing I’ve ever been to. Funnily enough, when I went to the World Equestrian Games in Aachen, I was ninth so I actually did better than I did at the Olympics, but I won a bronze medal at the Olympics and I don’t think anything will top that for a long time.”
My worst event…
“That has to be this year’s Badminton – I’ve never had anything like that [Tankers Town’s refusal to enter the starting box] before. I had very high expectations and suddenly it all went wrong within a minute.”
My best lesson…
“I have had some brilliant lessons, but I think Jane Gregory has given some of the best. I have so many different trainers, so it’s a bit difficult to pinpoint one.”
My worst lesson…
“Funnily enough, I had my worst lesson recently – it must have been in November. I was quite tired, and I went down to a lady to have some lessons and by the third lesson I just wanted to get off and forget about riding altogether. I can understand what she was talked about, but she was abysmal at teaching and I’ve never ridden so badly in all my life. It’s amazing how a bad teacher can make you ride badly.”
The best horse I’ve ever ridden…
“The best horse has to be Jasper [Tankers Town], obviously!”
The worst horse I’ve ever ridden…
“I have to be careful here! I have ridden some real rubbish; I think everyone has. I’ve probably had too many to mention. I did have one that was particularly awful, that left a leg and I dislocated my shoulder with, but I have had a few of them.”
The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given…
“The best piece of advice I was given was by Andrew Nicholson, who I get on very well with. I broke my collar bone about two weeks before Badminton and he said, “Sharon, you must go; two weeks is a long time,” which is very true. He also said if you’ve got a top horse, a 4* horse, you always go for it.
The worst piece of advice I’ve ever been given…
“I’ve had so much advice since this year’s Badminton, you cannot imagine! Put a coat over his head, do this, do that – I’ve been given nothing but advice since Badminton. Some of it has been very helpful, but some of it has been completely useless. Everyone has a valid point and everyone has a different type of horse, but I’ve probably had too much advice.”
The best film I’ve ever seen…
“I like the Wedding Crashers – that’s very funny.”
The worst film I’ve ever seen…
“I don’t really watch that many films, but I’ve watched some really bad comedies and horrors. Recently, I watched The Mist – a Stephen King film – which was the most horrible, mind-disturbing film I’ve seen for a long, long time.”
The best holiday I’ve ever been on…
“I’ve been on some brilliant holidays and I’m very lucky. I like going to the Caribbean. I also like Thailand too. I’ve probably had too many good holidays to single one out.”
The worse holiday I’ve ever been on…
“I did go to the Dominican Republic years ago, and that was awful. The weather was awful, the food was awful – there was no electricity and I just didn’t enjoy it.”
The best date I’ve ever been on…
“I’m still looking for the best date!”
The worst date I’ve ever been on…
“I’ve had a few bad dates, like everyone has, but I can’t think of one that’s really bad. It can make it quite difficult to date people that don’t have a clue about horses, and say: ‘why did you do that? Why didn’t you win today? Why don’t you win every day?’ That definitely happens.”
The best meal I’ve ever cooked…
“I’m not the best cook, but I can cook some meat, jacket potatoes and veg – it’s not very glamorous but it tastes alright. I can cook a good fry up – which isn’t very healthy!”
The worse meal I’ve ever cooked…
“I couldn’t make anything with sauces or anything from scratch!”
The best decision I’ve ever made…
“The best decision was keeping Jasper when I had lots of people trying to buy him from me. It sent me into turmoil, because they were offering lots of money.”
The worst decision I’ve ever made…
“Not buying a horse once when I should have. It had sarcoids, but turned out to be a really good horse.”
