Help! How do I get my mare on the bit?

Mares sometimes need a different approach

“Hi H&C, I have recently brought a five-year-old Connemara mare that is a total gem at everything but the only thing I’m having trouble with is I can't seem to get her nicely rounded on the bit.

Her last rider could get her to go on a beautiful outline, but I can't seem to get her to go round for me. My instructor tells me to squeeze my legs harder and have a firm contact but it only sometimes works.

I really want the best out of my mare because she is a really lovely horse with loads of potential so any tips would be great. Thanks."

Nelly Corboy. Australia.

H&C blogger Alice Oppenheimer replies:

“Dear Nelly, It sounds like you have a great relationship with and are really enjoying your horse – bar this one small hiccup. I hope that I can help you.

Mares are all different

I have had lots of experience with many mares and therefore will speak from the experiences I have had. I don’t disagree with the fact that your instructor wants you to ride the horse forwards from your leg, however, mares generally need a relaxed rider who is soft in the thigh to allow them to travel through to the bridle, resulting in the horse wanting to take the contact.

Do not be despondent that her previous rider was able to maintain a softer rounder outline, it will happen for you if you give it time and make sure that your connection from your hand to your rein is secure but your elbows and your shoulders are soft and non-restrictive. Once your upper body is able as described, a quick assertive leg, which remains relaxed, should achieve your required results.

Best of luck, let me know how it’s going.”
