Help! My lunge line is stuck on my pony

Wild ponies take time to trust people

"Hi, my name is Kayleigh. I have recently bought a wild New Forest pony but I am having trouble dealing with her and need some help. I have put a lunge rein on her and now can't get it off. I would really appreciate some help as I don't know what to do. Please help."

H&C's Jenny Rudall replies: "Hi Kayleigh, well done for getting in contact as it is very important for your safety and the welfare of the horse that you get some help.

Without knowing more about the pony and your experience levels, it is hard to know how exactly to advise you, but if as you say, the pony is wild then she will be very scared and very unused to human contact and if you panic her, she may injure you or herself.

I think you should find someone to help you with more experience and, using feed, encourage the pony into a pen where you can undo the lunge rope.  I suggest you ask anyone where you have her kept or if you have her at home then call the local stables for help.  You must be calm and slow around her and build her trust.  As I have said, you must get some help from someone more experienced and learn from them the best way to care for your pony.  You must gain her trust before working with her then start on the basics like leading and gentle grooming before lunging.

Good luck, Jenny."
