How do I get my four-year-old to fish?

"I'm keen to get my four-year-old son fishing so we can enjoy time together. Do you have any tips on gaining his interest and what tackle should I use?"

H&C blogger and fishing expert John Bailey replies: "It's really great to get kids started as young as possible. I began fishing (sketchily) when I was three and I was really into it by the time primary school arrived! the earlier you start, the more naturally the sport develops and the more intuitive your fishing becomes so good luck in your task.

The great thing about starting young is that you really can begin fishing at the lower levels. Starting teenagers off is a lot more difficult. They expect big fish early and as a result, their interest cools more easily.

Kids, whatever age, need action. It was years before I caught a proper fish and it's a miracle that I maintained my interest. Perhaps I was more bonkers than most children who like to see the float go down. I suggest, therefore, somewhere not too large where there is constant action. A lot of small pits and ponds would fit the bill especially as there are a lot of commercial fisheries now which are very heavily stocked.

Almost as important as venue is the weather. Only go out on mild, dry, comparatively windless days. If a four year old is getting buffeted with rain or wind, interest soon wanes. Think hard about clothing, too. Keep out the cold if there is any and guard against the sun if it's shining. It's also a good idea to take plenty of refreshments along as well. These provide a break as well as nourishment.

As far as tackle goes, I'd keep it as simple as possible. Try a youngster off with a whip. (A very short pole with no reel attached.) This is ideal for small fish and there is little chance of tangles. whips are also cheap so it's a good, inexpensive way to find out whether fishing is up your street. I'd then go with a simple float set-up and probably maggots as they are the most likely bait to catch any fish that swims.

Keep sessions relatively short and be quick to sense if there is boredom setting in. And the very best of luck!

John."
