How do I help my horse enjoy hunting?

The hunting field is a great place for youngsters to learn

"Hello, my name is Adam. I have a nine-year-old mare. Last week, I tried to take her out hunting. We got to the first field and she went mental; she started bucking and bolting and then shied at a ditch, leaving me in it.

I am already riding her in a three ring bit but I have no control. We rang the previous owner and he said that when she was three, she had a bad experience out hunting. Is there anyway I can gain control out hunting and get her calm and used to the hunting environment. Please reply it would be deeply appreciated."
Thank you.

H&C blogger and Olympic event rider Sharon Hunt replies: "Hi Adam. I think that you should try taking her with a nanny - a calm, experienced hunter - which might help to settle her. Also, possibly try riding at the back to help her. When you hunt, try to go and get her to settle then leave again as soon as she gets wound up so you don't over do it and then maybe build on that."
