How do I help my pony respect small fences?

"Hi, I have a young pony who only started junping during the summer. She appears to have no intrest in jumping at 60cm and just ploughs through, but at 80, clears her fences really well and starts to find her stride, but struggles to turn left at times and you are really fighting with her. She will race out to the right. What can I do? I am trying a new bit but if it's flexibility, what should I be doing? Thanks." Mags.

H&C blogger and Olympic bronze medallist three day event rider Sharon Hunt replies: "Well, I would try and build her confidence by perhaps jumping grids, which would help with her straightness. This sounds as though it needs some working on. Try grids with two non-jumping strides and gradually make them longer for up to five or six non-jumping strides as this will help you keep a rhythm and her straight. You can also jump her slightly bigger then too, as it sounds as though she doesn't respect smaller fences perhaps. I would also do lots of flatwork working on left circles to try and supple her and teach her to turn. Bitting could be the issue but work her reactions on the flat first, i.e. she stops, starts well, turns left and right easily and goes forward and back well. Also make sure you have tuition too, there may be something obvious to someone on the ground that you're missing. Sharon."
