"Help! What would I do to make a pony fit? I have been to look at a pony and after 20 minutes of a simple work out such as walk, trot, canter and jumping, he was very sweaty. His normal exercise is only two average lessons per week. Can you give me any advice of how to make him fit as a normal pony? Thanks. Millie."
H&C blogger and proprietor of Contessa Riding Centre TIna Layon-Elliott BHSI says: "Dear Millie, thank you for your question. When developing a fittening programme for a horse or pony there are a few important factors to consider: what do you want your pony to do able to do at the end of the training programme? How competent are you as a rider? You don’t want him to be so fit that he is difficult to manage. Does he live in or out? What does he get fed, is he a good doer, etc?
Generally it takes six to eight weeks to get a horse/pony fit for general pony club/riding activities. He needs to start with slow work in the first week, gradually increasing the length of time he is being ridden. This is the foundation of his fitness programme. Then think of introducing some trot work and again, gradually increase the time spent in trot.
It is also good to vary the type of exercise so include some hacking. Hill work especially is very good for building on fitness. Next introduce some canter and from then on it is just a case of increasing the length, frequency and intensity of sessions. Be aware that every horse is different and you will need to carefully assess the progression he makes, adjusting accordingly. If in doubt, try and seek the help of a qualified instructor.
Hope this helps. Good luck. Tina."
