"Dear H&C, how do I start my horse on the horse walker? I have recently broken a seven-year-old 16.3hh Cleveland Bay mare and all is going well; walk and trot and dressage is fun and we're starting more advanced movements soon as she is a quick learner! My yard has a horse walker that I think would be a useful tool in keeping her fit and to keep boredom at bay. I was looking for any hints or tips on how to introduce her to it, should I walk around with her to start? Pick a suitable 'lead' horse? The machine has an emergency stop and is in good working order with variable walking speed. Jenny."
H&C blogger and proprietor of Contessa Riding Centre Tina Layton-Elliott BHSI replies: "Dear Jenny, thank you for your question. I would not advise leading her around in the walker as it is a very small space, and if something was to happen it would put you in a very dangerous position. You could however walk around the edge with her if the design permits.
I would start with one other sensible horse as a lead that is least likely to panic if she gets excited. By having only one other horse on there, there is less chance of them becoming over excited and also easier to get them off if there is a problem. I would avoid putting horses directly behind her for a while. Obviously be extra cautious at this time of year and don't put her on if it is at all slippery.
Most horses take to it pretty well. Hope this helps. Tina."
