How do I stop my dog picking up?

"I have a six-year-old male Labrador, who is trained to the gun and goes out with our local shoot. The problem is he keeps picking up even when we're out on a walk. How do I stop him from picking up when he's not working?" Katie Brodie, Surrey

H&C's Howard Kirby replies: "Great to hear that you get to enjoy time picking up with your dog. If he is catching game when out on a walk you will need to get him on a lead or long line when in areas where there might be game. At this time of year, game birds will be nesting so we should do everything possible to ensure that all ground nesting birds are left undisturbed. Use your walking time to do some obedience and dummy training, you can put all of that retrieving instinct to good use - this will be good for everyone concerned."
