How do I stop my horse motorbiking in canter?

Using the lunge may help balance the canter

"I have a six-year-old, 14.2hh pony. He was originally broken to drive and has been broken for riding for about a year and a half. I've had him since September and we have had quite a few problems with his braking system! He is in a two ring snaffle to help him achieve canter, which appears to be working. The problem is, once he's cantering it becomes a gallop with his neck straight out and he then motorbikes around corners! Out hacking its worse because I just can't stop so end up yanking him in the mouth! I want to sort his canter out in the school first as I feel that this is the key to sorting him out. Please help? Thankyou. Emma."

H&C blogger and Olympic three day eventer Sharon Hunt replies: "I would suggest that you sort the canter on the lunge. I would lunge him in side reins that aren't tight to start (you can gradually tighten them as he gets more comfortable with them). I would do lots and lots of transitions from trot to canter so that he doesn't get too quick, also not on too small a circle. Make sure you control the canter and keep him balanced and waiting so he learns to keep rhythm. Once this is established then you will find it much easier to canter on his back! Best wishes, Sharon."
