“I have a 10-year-old mare that I haven’t had for a very long time, but when I get on her she rears up on to her back legs. She is such a lovely horse and I just want her to move on from her rearing. Thanks for your help, Tracey”
H&C Expert Jenny Rudall replies: “Hi Tracey, thanks for getting in touch as rearing is a serious problem and one that should be addressed before you move on in your horse's training. It sounds like she has an aversion to the rider mounting which would indicate she may have a problem in her back or possibly her teeth. I would either contact your vet or find an equine physiotherapist to come take a look at her and book her in to see an equine dentist. It would also be worth getting your tack checked as if your horse is associating pain with being mounted, the source could be badly fitting tack. I hope this helps and good luck with your mare. Jenny”
