What would you do if you didn’t work within the equine industry? I try not to think about that. I think I would like to be a policeman, preferably a detective.
Why did you decide to take on the role of coach and chef d'equipe to the junior and young rider show jumping teams? I started as the coach in 2006. When the Chef left in 2009, British Showjumping offered me the chance to do both jobs. It was a chance I was not going to turn down. I love the coaching but to organise, plan and structure on top of that was my dream job.
What do you think of the Olympics being held Greenwich Park? I was incredibly lucky to attend the Beijing Olympics where the Equestrian games were held in Hong Kong. Although the organising committee did everything they could to make it feel like an Olympics it did not have the same energy and excitement. To have Equestrian [events] in the heart of the Olympic city and to leave the legacy of keeping equestrianism at the heart of an Olympic games is very special. We are lucky enough to have so many venues in this country, which would have done a magnificent job, but for me equestrian in the heart of London... It will be a week not to be missed.
How often do you ride yourself? Never now, I am too busy to do it properly.
Who has the best yard you’ve visited? Recently, Nick Skelton’s new yard. It’s immaculate, workman like and had a great atmosphere.
What was the last thing you bought a ticket for? Buckingham Palace tour for my mother’s 75 birthday.
When was the last time you went on holiday? Beginning of February to Barbados it was full of British horsey people!
What was one of your funniest horse moments? We were at a Nation’s cup in Belgium. I had persuaded the team vet to get a sat nav. He is dead against modern technology when a good map would do the same. We set off from the hotel, with the sat nav on and went down some very small country roads. “You see,” he said. “It is useless, there has to be a quicker way than this.” I asked, “Have you got it set on fastest or shortest route?” “What are you talking about," he said. By now we are on a canal tow path and the track is getting smaller and smaller. I explained you had to set the type of route you wanted. “You do it," he instructed. I took the sat nav off the window, tapped in route types and there it was on the screen for all to see. The reason the vet had taken so long to get everywhere for the last week was because he had it set on bicycle route.
Whose horse would you like to own and why? Denman, as for why because hearing all those people cheer your horse home must be the best feeling in the world.
What would you change about your life? Very little! I could do with an extra day a week.
Who do you think is the one to watch in show jumping juniors and seniors this year? Mark Turnbull from Scotland in Juniors and Bruce Menzies in seniors
How do you relax? With friends and a bottle of wine!
Who inspires you? A lady I met at the youth Olympics who worked for the British Olympic Association called Jan Patterson.
What is your greatest achievement to date? The fact that something I have done may have helped others win a medal.
What is your top tip for H&C website visitors? The harder you work the luckier you become!
