By the time she was eight-years-old, Gemma Tattersall had won the riding club junior (U17) Dressage Championship and her first one day event. On leaving school, Gemma concentrated full time on her eventing career, and went to two European Young Rider Championships (Sweden 2005 & Czech Republic 2006) winning two team gold medals. Gemma has moved successfully up into the senior ranks, gaining the best U25 rider award at Badminton and is the current U25 National Champion.
What would you do if you didn’t work with horses? A sportswoman of some sort.
Why did you decide to go into eventing? As a child I was very competitive and after winning my first event at eight-years-old, I was hooked!
When is your next big competition? I have just been to Barocca d'Alva in Portugal and next up is Badminton.
How many horses do you ride a day? Between six and eight depending on what they are all doing.
Who has the best yard you’ve visited? Waresley stud is lovely. We used to go there to train as part of the world class programme and it was an amazing venue.
What was the last thing you bought a ticket for? A train ticket to go to an inspirational pre 2012 day at Greenwich park.
What other animals do you have? I have a gorgeous Jack Russell called Tottie who has just had five beautiful puppies.
Who is the person who inspires you the most? William Fox Pitt.
Whose horse would you like to own? Gazelle de la Brasserie who Karin Donkers rides, I think she is fantastic.
What goes through your mind as you enter the start box? It depends who I am riding and where I am competing but generally I just try and focus on the task ahead and stay positive.
When did you last kick yourself? Probably at Pau last year where my horse slipped and fell on the flat, when only four fences away from home. It was just one of those things but it was hugely frustrating.
How do you relax? Watching a good box set with a glass of rose.
Who is the one to watch this year? Me of course! I think Piggy French is amazingly talented so I would have to say her as well.
What is your top tip for H&C website visitors? Always believe in yourself, stay positive and make the most of what you’ve got.
