What would you do if you didn’t work within the equestrian industry? I would have been an actor, although I probably wouldn’t have been any good.
Why did you decide to reach the lofty heights of fellow of the BHS? It’s the kind of person I am, if I set my goal I am never happy till I reach it. I always knew I wanted to do my fellowship.
When is your next horsey event? I have several clinics and events throughout the year.
How many horses do you own? None at present, although I have just enquired about one but it can wait until after my holiday.
Who has the best yard you’ve visited? I am always just as impressed by a small yard run well, as with an international yard. Lavish facilities don’t impress me I am more impressed with excellent horse welfare and stable management. Those are the things that are important.
What was the last thing you bought a ticket for? A Pantomime in London…Robin Hood Queen of Thieves.
When was the last time you went on holiday? I went to Cornwall in the Autumn.
What was one of your funniest horse moments? This is easy; I was teaching at a pony club event many years ago when a girl was having problems with a whizzy show jumping horse that kept getting faster and faster into fences. I said the famous instructor phrase, “Just let me have a sit”. I trotted it into a cross pole it stopped, I fell off. Moral of the story: Never get on a horse and say, “Let me show you how it’s done”.
Whose horse would you like to own? I would like to ride anything trained by the greats like Reiner Kllimke.
What would you change about your life? The weather.
When did you last kick yourself? Constantly. I always think I can do better.
How do you relax? I go to the theatre and the opera; I walk my dog and of course riding and teaching.
Who inspires you? I don’t just get inspired by horsey people but those who have achieved against the odds and who remain grounded.
What is your greatest achievement to date? I was recently appointed an OBE for services to equestrianism.
What is your top tip for H&C website visitors? Strive to be the best, be authentic and don’t copy others. The horse world is very diverse so try and be the best in whatever attracts you. Keep fit, it’s always good to have outside interests and don’t read chat room forums.
