Toilet training trouble

"Hello, my name is Jackie.

I have just rescued a 12-week-old puppy that keeps going to pee in its bed or the other dogs bed. What do I do?"

H&C's Howard Kirby replies: "House training a young puppy is often made easier if you use a purpose built dog crate, ensure that you carefully take the puppy outside to your chosen toileting area each time it wakes up and after feed times, you will have to be vigilant and learn to spot the puppies behaviour as it starts to think about wanting to go to the toilet.

Use the crate as a secure safe sleeping area/bed for the new pup. It will almost certainly be helpful if you research Crate Training to ensure that this is used correctly. Most puppies are reluctant to mess in their sleeping quarters but as mentioned before it is essential that you take the puppy outside the moment it wakes up. If you remain consistent and patient during these next few weeks your puppy will soon be house trained. In the event of an accident do not scold the puppy as this can serve to frighten it. If possible restrict the puppies access to the other dogs bed to prevent these habits from developing further."
