Video: How to mount your horse

Mounting blocks should be sturdy and on level ground

"Dear H&C, I have always loved horses but never had the courage to ride but my boyfriend has recently bought me a series of lessons as a present and I am really worried I will make a fool of myself. Is there any advice you can give me on just how to get on so I don’t completely embarrass myself at the start. Thanks, Sarah."

H&C's Jenny Rudall BSc BHS Int SM replies: "Dear Sarah, thanks for your question and do not feel embarrassed. It is great that you are finally taking the plunge and we all remember what it was like to start. When you get to your stables, your instructor will make sure they show the basics on how to mount, but don’t feel rushed - take your time, get to know your horse first and don’t be scared to ask questions; that is what instructors are there for. I’ve made a video on how to mount with some useful tips on how to ensure you do it safely. Good luck with your lesson and let us know how you get on by joining our new forum; we love to hear from our H&C readers.”

Step one: Before you mount, get your instructor to show you how to check your stirrups and girth. If the girth is not tight enough the saddle will slip and by doing your stirrups before you get on, you'll save time. As a beginner, you should be mounting from a mounting block which is sturdy and on level ground. An instructor should also be there to hold your horse and to hold the opposite stirrup to again prevent the saddle from slipping.

Step two: Once on the mounting block, place the reins into the left hand so the horse can not walk forward and place the right hand on the far side of the saddle, preferably towards the front so as not to twist the saddle when getting on.

Step three: Place your left foot in the stirrup and, in one smooth motion being careful not to kick the horse, swing you leg over the saddle. Next lower yourself into the saddle and try and not to land heavily on the horses back. The person who was then holding your stirrup should then be there to help guide your foot into the right stirrup.
