What type of horse should I buy?

Irish Draught x Thoroughbreds have agility and speed

"Hello, my name is Jonathan and I'm 15. I have been looking for a horse for a while now and I really don't know what breed I should look for. I have been riding for nine years. I have been competing for the past year in show jumping and dressage. I have been placed and I have won a few trophies. I have done three events. At the moment I use a riding school horse but I would like to have my own. I have realistic funds. I am six feet tall and I weigh 12 stone. I would like your help in deciding what breed I should aim my search towards. Thanks."

H&C blogger and proprietor of Contessa Riding Centre Tina Layton-Elliott BHSI replies: "Dear Jonathan, thank you for your question. One suggestion would be an Irish Sport Horse, perhaps an Irish Draught x Thoroughbred. That way you usually get a good temperament from the Draught and the athleticism for competition from the Thoroughbred. You should also be able to find one of a good size and good amount of bone. They are generally good all-rounders and can do very well in most disciplines. The cost will vary depending on the bloodlines.

Make sure you have a good look around and try as many horses as possible. Try not to buy the first one you see! A young horse is not a good idea for a first horse, I would look at horses aged 7/8+ that are already established in the disciplines you wish to compete in.

Hope this helps. Good luck, I’m sure you will find it a very challenging but rewarding experience.

Tina."
