"Hi, I have a 15.3hh mare who can be very stubborn at times. When I ride her she's very forward to the leg, doesn't mess around and is very willing to go forward. But when my mum rides her she can not get her to go in the school without a fight or even get her moving out of the yard. She also stops with my mum on hacks for no reason. If you have any ideas to help prevent the arguments with my horse and my mum please let me know. Thanks, Emma x."
H&C blogger and Olympic eventer Sharon Hunt replies: "I think the answer to this is to make sure that your mother understands that some mares are incredibly sensitive. For example, exactly the same happens with my mare if other people ride her, but when it is only me ridnig her, she stays happy and straightforward. She is only lunged when I'm away. I suggest your mum doesn't put too much leg or pressure on the mare and I would just pat her and 'kid' her along so she feels it's her idea to go, rather than a fight. Mares are too sensitive and will not be bullied!
Hope this helps.
Sharon."
