"Hi, I have a six-year-old fresian which I have broken in to ride myself, but was broken to drive as a four-year-old. He was untouched between five and six, as his owner was scared of him. He can be bolshy and tank off in a headcoller, but he is fine to go to catch again. From May, I managed to get him out of the habit of tanking off in a headcoller and not tanking off 90 per cent of the time when being lunged in a snaffle. He was going really well in a Happy Mouth snaffle with a roller, but when I moved yards from a quiet field with just my stallion and him to DIY fields with lots of other horses, he started tanking off in hand even with a bridle and now he won't hack out on his own. I had to ride him in a three ring gag on the second hole which worked for a while but after a few weeks I could only just hold him even when I hacked out with others. He used to be so calm, he was even being fed high energy feeds, but now he's not fed anything and it's as though moving to a yard with lots of horses around has blown his head. I moved him to my own farm last week so it will be just him and my stallion. Do you think he might settle back down to his old self and what could I do until then? Teagan."
H&C blogger and Olympic eventer Sharon Hunt replies: "I would say that he will; it's amazing how horses change with different environments. I think once they have been quite 'buzzy' they always have a tendency to do this again but as long as you're aware then he should settle. I would work him quite hard so this stops him boiling over again and keep him turned out quietly as much as possible and feed him lower energy feed and hay. Keep him in a routine too so he knows what's happening each day."
