Beccy has been competing in Endurance since the age of six, when she completed her first ever 25 mile competitive ride on a borrowed pony, Oatie Crunch. Since that first taste, she has been lucky enough to compete some of the top horses both at home and abroad.
She was selected for the Young Rider Squad at just 14 in 2000 and was given the ride on Murmansk, an up and coming star, who she later purchased. The following year she made her Championship and British Senior team debut at the Europeans in Perugia, Italy; gaining the best senior placing since 1993 finishing seventh, a record which still remains today. Murmansk would continue on to take Beccy to WEG, Punchestown for the Europeans Championships and finally after six months in Dubai, the 2005 World Championships.
Beccy graduated from Writtle College with an Animal Science Degree, and then qualified with a Diploma in Personal Training and Sports Massage Therapy followed by Equine Sports Massage Therapy. With this she set up Total Training and Therapy, now Beccy Broughton Equine UK, training and coaching horses and riders of all levels and working with nutritionist and other professionals to combine all areas contributing to the Total Approach concept.
Beccy has two horses on the British Elite Squad for 2011; Java Sunlight who finished 40th at WEG 2010 and Tawmarsh Muharram (Mayday). Both are very special with their own unique stories. Java has been part of the family since she was a yearling and Mayday, bred by the late Marcy Pavord, is a son of Murmansk. In training, Beccy has a brother of Murmansk who appears to be living up to his family traits.
At home is Beccy’s husband Garry, who is an integral part of her back up team and son Jack who was two on October 6, 2010. Jack already rides one of Mummy’s ex-race horses and is a very important hand around the yard when it comes to feeding, grooming and fetching horses from the paddocks! We have not quite mastered the shavings fork yet, but he seems to be mastering the shovel and brush! Sue, Beccy’s mother, helps enormously and although she stopped riding many years ago still plays a huge part in her daughter’s success.
