Boyd Exell
Born in Bega, Australia, Boyd has been involved in equestrian sport since he was eight years old. He is a professional carriage driving trials competitor and trainer, and is now based primarily in Leicester.
At 16, Boyd won the Australian pairs championship. At 21, he left Australia for Britain to improve his riding and his carriage driving talent.
He was a Member of the Australian team at World Singles Championships in Ebbs 1998, trainer of the British pony team drivers for World Championships at Saumur 1999 and Karlstetten 2003. He was second in the FEI Pairs Top Driver Award 2001 and the Four-in-hand Top Driver Award in 2003.
Boyd has been crowned British National Champion an impressive three times; single horse in 2000 and four-in-hand in 2002 and 2003. In 2003 he also won the prestigious CAIO in Aachen and the following year took the International Driving Grand Prix at Royal Windsor.
Boyd broke his leg badly in 2006 just weeks before the WEG in Aachen and another accident the following January hampered his competition career, but he made a speedy recovery and his next two years were exceptionally successful: he secured prestigious wins both nationally and internationally, culminating in winning the FEI Driving World Cup Final in Gothenburg in Feb 2009.
In 2010, Boyd won the World Cup Indoor Driving Championships held in Geneva and the World Four in Hand Championships at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Kentucky.
Boyd is a renowned international trainer; among his clients is the successful US pony team.
