Carey’s career in the hospitality industry began at the age of 14 when she started work at the Royal Albion Hotel in Brighton, laying tables and then learning the heavy and hot art of silver service. Carey studied Fashion Journalism at the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, a great degree course that, after three years, made her realise she never wanted to write about fashion.
Whilst at university, Carey made some of her best friends working in front of and behind the bars at Epsom Downs public houses, Derby Arms and then later Rubbing House. These were also Carey’s first introductions to horses (of the racing kind).
Carey’s professional career in the drinks industry began in 2003 and she has taken adult schooling at both the Wine & Spirit Education Trust and the Beer Academy. She has continued her grape education at various wine schools including the Bordeaux Ecole du Vin. With a strong foodie passion and her enthusiasm about food/drink matching, Carey seeks to keep drink education fun and uncomplicated, believing that everyone has different tastes and that they should enjoy the simple pleasure of living to eat (always with a DrinkAware message and an everything-in-moderation diet, but of course).
Carey works a day-job in the drinks industry and is lucky enough to have a perfectly enjoyable time with lovely colleagues and great clients. A well-rounded job, she has fantastical administrative tasks when she is not tasting the pleasure of the world’s finest kitchens sipped alongside liquids crafted by devoted brewers, winemakers and distillers. All in all, it is a balanced duty.
Adding to this mix the learning curve of being a parent, Carey lives with her partner, Arnold, and their son, Sullivan. She enjoys travel, with Bordeaux and Brighton her two favourite cities, and being outside so that her son can run and she can take a deep breath away from the south western-ness of the capital’s suburbs.
