“Today is our last day and, although we’re all tired, I’m really pleased with the way things have been going. Today is probably our busiest day, but a shorter one with the final class taking at 4.40pm. The first thing we do is to go out and about to try to track down a few riders and get their opinions on who is going to win this afternoon. We manage to speak to Tim Stockdale and Billy Twomey in the stables and they give us great interviews.
Afterwards, we record an opening link by the lake, with the LG arena in the background before heading inside to roll the cameras pretty much non-stop for the next six hours. We start with the British Speed Stakes, which is always a crowd pleaser as the riders seem to really go for it; I guess at this stage there’s nothing to lose!
Laura Renwick absolutely flies around the course, knocking three seconds off her nearest rival, Marcus Fuch’s time, which seemed pretty quick in itself! Laura was so lovely to speak to and a great ambassador for the sport. If the powers that be are searching for a new character to front show jumping, she should certainly be near the top of their list.
Next up is the Barrel Racing and a chance to get our presenter Karl a ride on one of the ponies belonging to Mark Taylor, as promised yesterday. After five minutes, he’s flying around the warm up arena like a seasoned pro as well as performing for the camera; don’t you just hate people who are good at everything? John Grant on Pablo takes the prize this year, with Mark finishing third.
The celebrity polo match followed with Katie Price’s team taking on Amy Guy, (AKA Siren from Gladiators) and her team. Amy had been practicing really hard for this; we filmed her at the launch in Birmingham and then again while she had lessons at Rugby Polo Club. Katie had only just arrived back from America, where her chances to practice had been limited, but to add to this she had picked up a knee injury while training for the London Marathon. Sadly, she wasn’t able to take part but luckily for her, Jade De Vere Drummond - the PR and marketing manager for Grandstand - was able to stand in and did brilliantly. The crowd really got behind their teams and a really exciting game ended in penalties where Amy’s team won a well-deserved and hard earned victory!
After a short interval we are all ready to film the big event: the final of the Championships 2009. This time it’s a two-round competition, with the top eight going through to the jump off. The tunnel interviews flew by, and before we knew it, Robert Whitaker was galloping around the arena, hat in hand and taking the honours for a record third time. Nathalie Van Der Mei finished a brilliant second and Robert Smith a very commendable third; hopefully he will be back next year to challenge for his third victory.
After interviews with all three, we packed up our stuff, dismantled the edit suite and headed back to the office to continue the editing for transmission later this month.
There are lots of ups and downs with this job, but working with such a fantastic team and filming a quality event really does make me appreciate how lucky I am - however tough the going gets.”
