“On Saturday morning, we needed to get an interview with Roelof Brill, as he’d won the second leg of the competition. With the help of Jade, the press officer for Grandstand, we managed to arrange to meet him at midday for a chat. We also needed to shoot some links with Karl to introduce the polo that was happening later that day.
We headed to the stables to do these with the polo ponies in the background, and by 11.30 have pretty much everything we need. By chance, we bumped into Mark Taylor, the barrel racing rider, who offered to give Karl a quick lesson before the Sunday afternoon performance - an opportunity not to be missed!
Roelof met us as arranged and we interviewed him on the Rugby polo club stand with the Andrews Bowen guys running around trying to get their poster in the back of the shot - very naughty! Roelof is fantastic to interview and hopefully we have got a really interesting piece for the third programme.
We filmed the first round of the Arena polo championship with commentary from Phil Ghazala and David Baker, whose brother Phil was riding in the match. The crowd really got behind the two teams and had the added bonus of being offered free lessons if they caught the ball. They played with a Snow Polo ball which is much larger and lighter than a normal arena polo ball so it flew into the stands on several occasions.
The third leg of the British Open championships was a speed class and this was next to do on our list. A few shake ups in the results for this one: the very happy Puis Schwiser came in first on Ulysse X, Nick Skelton on Nemo was second and the Dutch rider Nathalie Van de Mei third on Reinetella. Robert Smith was back in 11th and Robert Whitaker 13th, so it’s anyone’s guess who will win the Final tomorrow - most riders are still in with a chance.
Our really busy day continues with the Accumulator: a one-round speed class, with a joker fence option at the end. We go into the arena to do the intro to the show as the riders do their course walk. The joker fence is an upright that’s well above my head. It’s a real treat to get close to the jumps as you really can’t get the scale on a TV screen.
The cameraman suggests some movement in the shots to give it a feel of speed and spins round filming Karl’s opening links. I’m sure the four of us must have looked ridiculous running around behind him trying to stay out of the camera lens! After a really exciting class, Ellen Whitaker triumphs on the horse she’s had since she was 15, Kanselier, Leon Thijssen on Who Cares was second and Guy Williams 3rd on Belinka VH Overlede Goed.
To finish off the day, we filmed the final round of the Arena Polo Championship with an overall win for Team Vinopolis. I am biased as a polo fan, but I think it’s such a great addition to the championships and the riders take no prisoners: Amy Guy and Katie Price better watch out tomorrow, I don’t think they’ll make any allowance for novices!
As we have a relatively early finish, we have a few drinks at the hotel and mull over the week so far before heading to bed.”
