“I met the crew at 9.00am this morning, as we still had a lot to do. As the weekend progresses, we are doing more and more classes, so we need to make sure we stay on track with the back stories and interviews.
First up we have Pete Harnett, who is the stable manager for the whole show. He gives us a good interview and tells us how he copes with the demands of stabling so many horses and ensuring they are well looked after during their stay. We then moved down to the shopping area and chatted with Helena Petitt, the MD of Grandstand, who organises the British Open and HOYS. She has an immense task over the four days, but still makes time to fit in an interview with us, which was much appreciated.
At 3.00pm, we met to set up for the second leg of the British Open competition. The format is the same: we try to get as many interviews in the tunnel with riders coming out of the ring as we can - it really shows the highs and lows the riders go through on a regular basis; show jumping is a cruel sport!
Roelof Brill on Calover won today, with Ellen Whitaker on Ocaldo second and Robert Whitaker on Lacroix third. Robert Smith comes in seventh and makes it clear to us that he thinks his chances are slipping.
Later this evening, we covered the event that we were all looking forward to: the Puissance. I think our whole team is in awe of the riders attempting to clear the massive wall that’s now taken centre stage. I have to say, the most nervous looking rider was Laura Renwick, but she shouldn’t have worried as her horse, Twister, cleared the wall well the first time round. He did knock it down in the second, but it was still a great achievement in my book!
After a nail biting four rounds, the only competitors left were William Whitaker on two rides, Leonardo and Cyber Space, Ellen Whitaker on Ladina B and Derek Morton on Teddy Bear. As Derek left the arena after clearing the wall in the third round, he commented to us that he’d rather be watching Pink in concert.
The two amazing Whitakers eventually shared joint first with their three horses and Derek came a very gallant fourth. I think that Ladina B could have carried on jumping until she hit the roof; she doesn’t look like an easy ride, but Ellen handles her beautifully.
At the end of day two, I’m very tired but things are still on track for now.”
