Edward began riding at age fourteen, with riding association ‘De Spreng’. He trained at Rien van der Schaft, but later he moved to Anky van Grunsven's yard. With her help and with the extra aid of her husband Sjef Janssen, Edward has achieved his greatest successes.

In 1998, Edward came fourth with the young horse Kappuccino in the PAVO cup. Then he won the national title at Z2 level and was champion in the Third level. Between 1999 and 2001 he was second four times in the national championship in Nijmegen, but he went one better a year later and won the small tour aboard the Flemmingh stallion Lingh.

Since 1999, Edward has taken part in international games and has been particularly successful in the small tour. He gained top three places in Amsterdam, Mechelen, Hertogenbosch, Saumur and Rotterdam.

He successively trained four horses to a Grand Prix level. Gestion Risky Business, Gestion Kappuccino and Geldnet Lingh gained fine scores. Since 2004, Edward and the black stallion Gribaldi reached Grand Prix and also managed to win the freestyle during the CDI for stallions in Zwolle.

With Ling, Edward finished second at the 2005 World Cup Finals in Las Vegas and won team silver at the 2005 European Championships and 2006 World Equestrian Games. Edward and Lingh became formidable competition for his trainer Anky. Edward won both tests during the trials for the Olympic games and, to top it all off, in June he won his first Dutch championship with Geldnet Lingh.

But the best was yet to come. At Hickstead in 2009, at the final World Dressage Masters competition of the year, Edward and the magnificent 9 year old black son of Gribaldi, Moolands Totilas, broke Anky's world record score in the Grand Prix freestyle with a huge score of 89.4%. The combination received a standing ovation from the crowd.

And this was just the beginning; the pair went on to break their own records repeatedly as the dressage world watched the stars reach their zenith. It was no surprise to see Edward and Totilas in the medals at the World Equestrian Games in Kentucky in 2010, winning the gold as part of the Dutch team and as an individual.

But it was not to continue; in 2010, Totilas was sold to German breeder Paul Schockemohle to Edward's devastation. The ride on the amazing black stallion was eventually given to Matthias Alexander Rath and the pair are due to make their competition debut in February 2011.

Despite losing his incredible partner, Edward Gal was still dominant on the grand prix circuit in 2010 with the Gribaldi sired Sisther de Jeu. At Olympia, the pair came third in both the qualifier and the kur and Edward received a rapturous welcome from the crowd showing that to them, he was still a star with or without Totilas. He went on to win the sixth leg of the 2010/2011 World Cup Dressage series in Mechelen, Belgium, with Sisther de Jeu.

Together with his manager Nicole Werner, Edward manages a dressage stable in the tiny village of Harskamp. Together they run the yard; Nicole takes care of the management and Edward rides the horses.

Besides riding, Edward trains other top riders in Holland. He works with his partner Hans Peter Minderhoud, and the two support and help eachother in training and at competitions.
