Horses Help Heroes aim to raise money for injured British service personnel through completing a one-off challenge: To carriage drive a pair of horses the length of Britain in just ten days. The appeal has been backed by a number of high profile individuals, including the generous support of His Royal Highness Prince William.
Inspired by a Wiltshire ambulance paramedic, the challenge is to drive a replica WW1 Ambulance non-stop from Lands End to John O’Groats. The nine pairs of horses will work in relay and the ambulance driven by a team of 10 wounded service personnel. It is a test of both human and equestrian endurance that will capture the imagination and interest of all horse lovers and supporters of our troops up and down the country.
The challenge will start on 21 June 2011 and journey through some of the great towns and cities of Britain. It will take in a number of scheduled stops in order to enable local horse lovers, fundraisers and the larger population to participate. We also envisage a number of celebrities joining, and even riding alongside the ambulance on its journey.
Horses Help Heroes have set an ambitious but achievable target of £1 million to be raised. It will be distributed by Help for Heroes to the three charities The Army Benevolent Fund, Combat Stress, and BLESMA (British Limbless Ex Service Men's Association).
The majority of Britain’s growing numbers of brave and psychologically damaged service people will need essential and costly lifetime support. Please remember them and give generously.
