Acknowledged as one of the leading event riders in the world, Leslie has produced a string of horses up to international level including his two famous grey full brothers, Shear L’Eau and Shear H20.
Leslie Law came away from the Athens Olympics in 2004 with an individual silver medal, but after a late ruling on a technical infringement by the German rider Bettina Hoy - who had been awarded the gold - he was elevated to Olympic champion with Shear H20.
Fifteen years after first representing Britain in a major championship and after half a decade as a regular member of the British team, Leslie had finally reaped the individual rewards of his consistent performances for his country. First selected for the British Olympic team in 1996, he was denied the chance to compete in Atlanta when his horse went lame; his individual success in Athens was long overdue.
Born in Herefordshire and raised in a council house, he started riding at the age of ten and through sheer hard work and dedication, Leslie progressed from schooling and competing young show jumpers for an American businesswoman to running his own training and competition yard in Worcestershire with his fiancée and fellow event rider Trina Lightwood.
Four years later his Olympic dream was rekindled after finishing second at Badminton on Shear H20, the horse that he had always felt could take him to the top of the sport. Following team manager Yogi Breisner’s instructions prior to the cross-country at Sydney to “Come home clear and inside the time” - and so help to win a silver medal for Britain - Leslie has been one of the most valuable members of Team GB.
At the European Championships in 2003 in Ireland he was given the pathfinder’s role in the team for the first time and responded superbly with a faultless performance across country. His performance set up the British team for a successful defence of the European title.
Leslie began 2005 with a great performance at the four star Rolex-Kentucky CCI in the USA, where he finished third on Coup de Coeur. At Badminton he made history once again by being the first rider to compete at the event on two full brothers but his bid for the title ended disappointingly when neither horse completed the cross country section.
Despite this uncharacteristic lapse, Leslie retained his place in the British team. Coup de Coeur was the selectors’ choice for Leslie to partner but a late training injury brought his Olympic partner Shear L’Eau into the squad. Hopes of an individual title were dashed when Shear L’eau lost a shoe, but Leslie earned his third European Team Gold.
Since arriving in the United States, Leslie has racked up a huge list of accomplishments including: three time American Advanced Champion, Young Event Horse Champion and Reserve Champion, multiple CCI *** and CIC *** wins and top placings, and multiple CCI ** and CIC ** wins and top placings. He has found horses for and coached some of America's top young riders and has had many adult amateurs in the top placings at the American Eventing Championships.
Leslie is now based from May to November in Virginia and the rest of the year in Florida, USA. He gives demonstrations, teaches throughout the country and produces event horses.
