Winter jumping and dressage

"Well, this week has been very similar to the last couple as I went back to Addington on Tuesday and also had a dressage outing on Thursday at Wix. You never know in the winter if the weather will get bad suddenly and you can't go out competing, particularly after Christmas as my lane is not good in the ice, so I try and cram in as much as possible now and get ahead. Having said that, we are also very busy at home with the young horses too; Bomber (Bomber) and Charlie (my new horse) are being educated with as many spooky fillers as possible - they aren't really ready yet for competitions so I'm doing as much preparation as I can here. Some are still on hacking – Joe (Jorrocks Curtis) and Harry (Azeb) – and Kenny (Kenny) started schooling again as he was far too fresh and needs working properly again. Next week, Jasper (Tankers Town) starts hacking and it’s not long until Bob (Good Sport II) does too so we will be working 11 again! Let’s hope the weather gets better as this weekend was quite revolting. Without an indoor school you learn to be quite tough and so do the horses.

I took four to Addington this week: Tweedy (Silbalto), who again jumped well, Romeo (Romeo Z) too, Imp (Impulsive) had just one down in four rounds and was third in the Newcomers, and finally, Amber (Red Amber) who jumped clear rounds but collected a couple time faults as her changes are not yet established and she was a little fresh! I plan to take Ken there this week as I am aiming to jump some slightly bigger classes in the premier show in a couple weeks – time permitting.

I also went to Wix for some dressage, I again competed Amber and Imp. For Amber this was a fantastic exercise as she was not very relaxed in the first test but then settled for the second – a vast improvement. Imp was great, much more settled in his outline/rhythm and performed very good tests and got 74 per cent in his second test (Elementary) and came first and second.

I have also been working again on various different projects including more 'How To' videos for Horse & Country TV’s website (watch this space!), as well as lots of swimming to stop any winter weight gain. I also looked at a potential new horse, which hopefully will be on my yard soon.

I am looking forward to next week and I think Jasper is too – he hates time off and with how I'm managing to fill my weeks up, so do I it seems!"
