Polo in Chamberlain Square

In preparation for her forthcoming celebrity polo match against Katie Price, Amy Guy – AKA Gladiators’ Siren – enjoyed her first lesson with Rugby Polo Club proprietor Philip Baker in Birmingham city centre’s Chamberlain Square.

The former Miss Wales and Miss UK may be a little rusty, but is confident in her ability: "I've been out of the saddle for a few years, but it’s like riding a bicycle. Once you have learned, it just comes straight back to you. I began riding when I was about three years old, so I think I could ride before I could even run.”

"The most difficult part is co-ordinating the stick. Most people think that if you can ride, you can obviously play polo, but that's like comparing a sprinter to a hockey player,” she said.

To celebrate Birmingham hosting the first ever Celebrity Arena Polo match at the British Open Show Jumping Championships this Easter holiday, Amy had her lesson in front of a public audience and press.

Amy, who always rises to a challenge, is revelling in the opportunity to play polo alongside celebrities and top polo professionals. Multi talented Amy, who has a degree in architecture, is no stranger to pressure, having represented Great Britain in mounted games and show jumping. She has an impressive sporting history, including turning her hand to stunt riding and jousting whilst at university.

But Amy’s sporting ambitions don’t end there. Looking beyond playing polo in front of thousands of spectators at the NEC, she said: "With my sporting side coming back into play, I now have my sights set on the Olympics 2012," she said. "I am back in athletics training and hope to compete in the modern pentathlon."

The British Open Show Jumping Championships will take place at the NEC, Birmingham from 16th – 19th April 2009.

H&C will have extensive coverage of the show both online and on television.
