Popular event rider and H&C personality Lucinda Fredericks and the plucky Headley Britannia dominated in the final phase of the 2009 Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event.
Lucinda and her 16-year-old mare Headley Britannia pulled off a double clear to finish on their dressage score of 32.3. Second place went to an equally tearful Bettina Hoy of Germany and Ringwood Cockatoo, with a final score of 38.4.
In 2007, Lucinda’s husband Clayton won the event, but today it was her and the 15.3hh mare that were centre stage.
Lucinda and ‘Little Brit’ won Burghley in 2006, Badminton in 2007, and were silver medalists at the 2008 Olympics in Hong Kong.
‘Brit’ came to the Fredericks to be sold, and thankfully there were no takers for her; Lucinda found her horse of a lifetime.
“She’s a winner. She tries her guts out and has the attitude to do well. She’s one in a million. Brit owes me nothing now,” she said
Lucinda plans on using some of her winnings to do further embryo transfers with Brit, who is the only mare to have won all three legs of the Rolex Grand Slam, eventing’s Triple Crown.
Speaking after her victory, she said: “I’ve been pretty focused all week - I haven’t had other people to worry about. Normally I do a lot of training so I have pupils at the same events with me.”
Lucinda knew after jumping her first warm-up fence that Brit felt great. “Brit didn’t put a foot wrong in show jumping, and she’s going to go to a lot of people’s hearts; she’s certainly gone to ours.”
British rider Nicola Wilson received the Best Conditioned Award for Opposition Buzz after the three days of competition.
