The sensational 3 year old racehorse, Sea The Stars, has been retired to stud after an incredible season.
For the entire Flat season, one horse has dominated. From the running of the first Classic in May, the 2,000 Guineas, Sea The Stars has been the name up in lights, acclaimed after playing with his rivals over all distances. In five consecutive races at the highest level – Group One – the colt has regularly beaten the best of his generation including three cracking colts, Rip Van Winkle, Fame And Glory and Mastercraftsman, trained by Aidan O'Brien, at Ballydoyle.
The Cape Cross sired colt enjoyed victories in Newmarket’s 2,000 Guineas, the Derby at Epsom and most recently the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, but connections opted against letting him have one final foray in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
“They have all been major races and every one was important in its own right,” Oxx said. “You win the Guineas and you win the Derby and the anxiety builds up as the year goes on, so every race brought tremendous relief when it was over."
“After the Derby the horse developed a great public following and everyone quickly recognised they were watching something special," he explained. Oxx sites the horse's incredible turn of speed off any pace and his cruising speeds as his biggest strengths.
50 year-old jockey Mick Kinane has enjoyed a resurgence aboard this fabulous colt, and the pair never looked beaten all season. "The thing about this horse is that he can hit top gear in three strides. I have never felt acceleration like it. But, he is not going to run away with you. You can pull him back and settle. But he is also cute. He saves a bit. He is very intelligent. Of a morning, if he sees anything new he will stop and look," said the great jockey.
On the decision to retire the horse, Oxx confirmed: “It has been decided after discussions with Mr Christopher Tsui (owner) that Sea The Stars will not take part in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita on November 7th. He’s had a long season and has been in regular fast work from March 3rd, with his final work-out on October 2nd. He’s been in intensive training for seven months with only a three-week break after the Eclipse Stakes at the beginning of July. We feel it is unfair to keep him going any further given his unprecedented record of achievement in the last six months.”
No information has yet been released, but it is understood that Sea The Stars will now stand at stud in Ireland.
