Newlands Corner Riding Club Show: Results and review

Both the sun and the competitors shone brightly at Newlands Corner Riding Club field on Sunday 20 June.

The friendly atmosphere and range of classes attracted a wide range of entrants from all over the area, many of whom praised the organisation of the show and appreciated the opportunity to take part in an event that offered something for everyone.

Sue Brougham, a long-standing member of the riding club, said: “It’s a great place to bring horses for a relaxed outing. The nice thing about Newlands Corner Riding Club is the friendliness, helpfulness and the family atmosphere. There is a complete range of horses and riders and everyone enjoys these events.”

Tony Whipps, eventer, trainer and respected member of the local equestrian community, judged the showing classes and also complimented Newlands Corner on its show. “It’s a good place for people to learn and be given advice about turnout and attire before moving on to higher levels. They can come and learn from supportive judges and other competitors. It’s also an excellent opportunity to bring young horses to begin their education and gain experience at shows like this,” he said.

The winners
Minimus jumping juniors
Francesca Jobson, who is eight-years-old won this section with Elis, her nine-year-old pony that she has owned for six months. “I am just getting used to him at the moment – he is a bit lively! He bombed off at first and my sister helped me, then she fell over a fence so it was quite a surprise to win! I think Elis might be more of a dressage horse.”

Georgina Jobson, her older sister won the Novice Jumping (Juniors) with her pony Millie – so it was a successful outing for the family who had travelled from Hook. Dad Matt Jobson said “We searched everywhere for a show which had 1’6” and 1’9” classes for Francesca to start with and not many places offer that, so she was so excited to come here today. It’s good to come to a show which has something for everyone.”

Minimus jumping seniors
Danielle Bruton and her 17-year-old, 16hh chestnut, Lenamore Cossack won this class, came second in the beginners’ jumping class and also completed a clear round. Danielle, who has owned Lenamore Cossack for six years, says: “He mainly does dressage and is starting his jumping career late in life but he loves it! He is really getting his confidence now and we are hoping to move up a bit with our jumping. His next outing is the team dressage when we will be representing Newlands Corner Riding club at Elementary and Medium level.”

Beginners’ jumping: juniors
Hannah Medland and her youngster, Foley won this, the 1’9” and the 2’3” class. Foley is a distinctive six-year-old strawberry roan blanket appaloosa and was only backed last year. “This is only my second ever show with him as we couldn’t compete with him for a while after I got him. My friends thought I was mad getting such a young horse but we just get on really well.” Mum, Angela Medland, who has been a member of Newlands Corner Riding Club for several years, was thrilled that Foley and Hannah had just ‘clicked’ and said, “We’ve had such a lovely day.”

Beginners’ jumping: seniors
David Searl won this class with Nye Tyson who is 14.1hh and is 10-years-old. Jenny Dodds owns Nye Tyson and has had him since he was nearly four. “He came to me as a ride and drive but now he does a bit of everything really!”

Jenny Dodds has been a member of Newlands Corner Riding Club since at least 1967 and reckons she must be the oldest competing member at the moment! At 71-years-old, she says: “You just keep going, you don’t stop! Newlands Corner is a friendly riding club and I can hack here for shows. There’s always a good assortment of events going on.”

David Searl also went on to win the Very Novice Jumping on Nye Tyson and came second with Bronwyn, so it was a jolly successful day for him!

Showing classes: NCRC fun class
Keen Newlands Corner team member, Caroline Brougham and the 15hh, four-year-old Gunner were the winners in the first showing class of the day. “This is his first show under saddle – we have had him four months. He seems to have shrunk a bit since we bought him but he’s very sweet natured and easy to do.” She is hoping to do a prelim dressage test in a couple of months and may try a tiny hunter trial course before the end of the year.

Showing classes: Riding club horse or pony
Pam Quinnell and Ballyshiel Thomas (Tommy to his friends) were winners of this class. He is 12-years-old and a very handsome 16.3hh skewbald. She says: “We have had him since he was eight and we will have him for life!” He does riding club dressage with Pam and jumps with her daughter, and also hacks with her husband at weekends – what a great all-rounder!

Showing classes: In-hand showing
Nicola Kennard and her 12-year-old, 15.3hh, stunning grey horse, Castlemoon Rebel were victorious in this class. She has owned him for nine years and he is by Huntingfield Rebel and Castleduff Silver. Nicola has been a member of Newlands Corner Riding Club for three years and represents the team at dressage and has been very successful at dressage to music. “The club has such a nice, friendly, welcoming atmosphere and it’s always lovely to do things with the teams and try something new.” Her daughter can’t wait to join, as soon as she is old enough, she adds.

Showing classes: Veteran horse and pony
The winners were Catherine Carter from Shamley Green and Guinness who is still looking amazing at 21-years-old. He is an Irish draught by Cloverhill. She has owned him for 11 years and says he does “everything”. They also came second in the Novice jumping and, after their success, Catherine said she was hoping to join the riding club as soon as possible!
