Have your say on marine conservation zones

Have your say on marine conservation zones

The Angling Trust have informed members of the new Marine Conservation Zones plans, which are set to protect habitats for fish and other species around the coast of England and Wales. The Trust believe these zones present an opportunity to protect fish stocks from damage from dredging and commercial fishing, but it is really important that anglers have their say about where they should be located, and encourage the planners not to put unnecessary restrictions on recreational angling. Recreational anglers are represented on each of the four project areas which have been set up to decide where the zones should be located, but individuals can also have their say by visiting the link below.

The mapping tool allows you to input where you go fishing and also about 'Ecological knowledge’ and ‘Habitats’ which allows you to add areas containing spawning and nursery grounds, any areas you have noticed high numbers of juvenile fish or any specific habitats you may know about. You can also record any areas that you think should be protected along with a description why. You have to register your name and e-mail address to be able to provide your input, and then click on the link in the e-mail which is sent to you automatically to validate your account. There is a helpful user guide on the site explaining how to mark areas which are important to you for fishing or as important habitats for fish or other wildlife.

We urge all sea anglers to take the time to input to this process so that your voice can be heard. Please forward this story to any sea anglers you know so that they can do the same.
