Robyn is the winner of the Character category and overall winner of the competition

We loved going through your entries to our Amanda Lockhart photography competition. Your character photos made us laugh, and the section winner of the Character category was also the overall winner of the competition! Well done to Jess Keating from Newcastle with the image above. Robyn wins a signed copy of Amanda's latest book and the opportunity to have Amanda photograph her horse or pet! What an amazing prize!

Winner of the Character category

Jess said of her image: "Merlin was being shod and in order to distract him, my older sister was giving him some attention, resulting in her receiving some horsey kisses."

Amanda said of the shot: "This is a charming picture - it shows such a wonderful bond between horse and owner. You don't need to see the whole of the horse's head to see the humour in its face."

Runners up

The five runners up in this category can be seen in the carousel below. Of the images, Amanda said:

Francesca Morrison's photo of her holding her horse's knee: "I would have recropped this image from a landscape to a portrait to balance it a bit more and to focus the attention of the viewer on the important part of the picture. It's a lovely shot."

Kyra Hunt's photo of a horse sitting down: "There is something about this horse that just makes you smile - it's not just the way he is sitting, but the wonderful expression on his face."

Becky Gibson from Orkney's picture of a rider looking at a coloured horse: "This picture has a lovely softness to it. Horse and rider are both engaged with one another in an open setting, without being tied to one another. The spotty top might be a coincidence, but it works in black and white to unite the two further."

Richard Fairweather and Rose Lewis's pictures of horses 'smiling': "I can't choose between these two as they are so similar but I have shortlisted both because they both look like they are having a proper laugh."
