The H&C team is still reeling from an exciting and nailbiting Badminton 2011. Throughout the event, we provided a Twitter commentary to keep you up to date with all the action as it happened, and published exclusive rider interviews. Check out our coverage and videos on our special Badminton 2011 page.
The excitement built throughout the dressage phase, as 21-year-old newcomer Laura Collett held an early lead, until Ruth Edge demonstrated her dressage prowess on the second day of the competition. Ruth's score was promising, but it was not to be. Following a second refusal on the cross country course, Ruth and Two Thyme called it a day. Hugh Thomas' cross country test was technical and demanded clever riding. While there were plenty of thrills, there were also more spills than normal, with the Quarry and Huntsman's Close presenting particular problems. H&C's Gemma Tattersall sadly suffered a fall, and Elizabeth Power was airlifted to hospital after losing consciousness. Fortunately, no riders or horses suffered serious injuries and all were well at the end of the day. Mark Todd was the last to run, and clinched the lead overnight. Just one pole separated the top 12 as the competition moved into the show jumping phase, and poles fell for serious contenders Marina Kohncke and Nicola Wilson, but it was Mark Todd - 31 years after his first Badminton - who kept his nerve and took the win, jumping the calm, professional clear round we expected from this true legend. A delighted and emotional Piggy French took second, and H&C favourite Mary King took third. As always at Badminton, the exciting atmosphere would not exist without the crowd, and this year was no exception. The crowd clapped, cheered and bit their nails to the quick as the competition unfolded and their roar or delight as Toddy claimed the title was deafening. Were you at Badminton 2011?
