Royal Windsor: Penultimate round up

Riders from the USA dominated the penultimate day of this year’s Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Kraut's a winner

Laura Kraut started the winning streak in the seven and eight-year-old championship, galloping to the final fence on Laura and Joan Kalman’s Woodstock O. She stole victory from British number one Guy Williams riding Djakarta. This was the second time this week that Laura had headed a line-up with this horse, having won the previous day’s grade B and C competition.

Two of Laura’s pupils shared equal first in the Land Rover six-bar with Britain’s Tim Stockdale.

Final round at 2.06m

In the final round, in which the last fence stood at 2.06m, Catherine Pasmore and Vandavid, winners of yesterday’s Land Rover grade A & B class, Jessica Springstein and Vornado van den Hoendrik, and Tim with Fresh Direct K2, all had one of the four fences down in the fifth round.

Both Tim and Catherine have previously won six-bar classes, but for Jessica this was a first. In fact, it was the first time she’d every attempted one.

'A lot of fun'

“It was a lot of fun,” said Jessica, 19, whose rock star father Bruce Springstein is at the show supporting his daughter. “I love this show. The atmosphere is amazing. You just don’t get shows like this in America where you can see so much in the same place.”

Laura Kraut then headed the accumulator with Joyce Williams’ Winde III taking a gallop to the final set of planks with the agile mare.

Armed forces

The armed forces were also competing over the sticks, with the final of the Land Rover services team jumping competition being held in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen.

Warrant Officer second class Nicholls secured a win for the Animal Defence League A team by jumping a clear round on the 17-year-old mare, Zara.

He is hoping to buy her when she is retired at the end of the year, but not before aiming her at the Royal Tournament and London International Horse Show, Olympia, first.
