The cancelled 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships are to be rescheduled to run alongside the 2013 championships at next year's Badminton Horse Trials.
The 2012 Championships were cancelled due to adverse weather conditions, which left the ground at Badminton waterlogged and partially flooded.
"At Badminton we are delighted to double up on our Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships in 2013 after the enormous disappointment of the 2012 cancellation. This solution will mean that no riders are denied the chance of taking part in an event at this iconic venue. We look forward to welcoming everyone next year," said Hugh Thomas, Event Director.
The rescheduled Mitsubishi Motors Grassroots Championships will be hosted as a separate class alongside the 2013 Championships, and all of those combinations who were eligible for the 2012 finals will remain eligible until the Championships are held in 2013.
Riders eligible for the 2012 Championships that go on to qualify the same horse for the 2013 Championships will only be able to compete in one class under BE rules.
Will Telfer, a farrier from Northumberland, had qualified his 10-year-old gelding Vesuvius for the finals.
"Last year, I went up to Central Scotland Horse Trials, which happened to be a regional qualifier for the Grassroots Championships," said Will. "I think for me it was very disappointing when the event was cancelled, but for those who were planning to retire horses at the end of this season it must have been heart-breaking."
Will was pleased to learn that the event had been rescheduled, but he has not yet decided whether to run Vesuvius again at next year's Championships.
My aim now is to head to Novice and try to qualify for a one-star so all is not lost. The decision of whether I will run at Badminton next year will be made nearer the time, but I will aim my youngster there for the 2013 Championships either way."
