Roger's Revenge is top racehorse to riding horse

By Victoria Spicer on 7th-Oct-2012

Victoria Smart’s Roger's Revenge stole the show in the SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse Championship on Saturday at Horse of the Year Show (HOYS).

Smart win

The seven-year-old had been in training with Victoria's husband Bryan, the Yorkshire-based racehorse trainer, before it was decided the gelding would be better suited to another career and he made a successful switch to the show ring.

In the video above, H&C's Jenny Rudall asks Victoria for her tips about retraining racehorses for showing.

Scotland celebrates

A Scottish producer made a successful trip to Birmingham, when Kirstine Douglas and Barneebus won the Equimax/Eraquell Cob of the Year, with Jill Day’s Chesterton in reserve.

In the Caldene Arena, the top two places remained the same from last year in The Leeman Family Maxi Cob of the Year Championship, with Heather Clay’s Hallmark IX finishing champion and Nina Armstrong’s Tank Top in reserve.

Ridden by Simon Reynolds, the eight-year-old Hallmark IX formerly measured into the lightweight classes, finishing reserve in 2009 and then Champion in 2010. This versatile cob will now enjoy a season of show jumping and cross country schooling.

Return to health

In the Topham Barnes Show Hunter Pony of the Year final, the 133cm section winner Mrs Fairey’s Stambrook Wedding Belle took the honours, ridden by daughter Eleanor Fairey.

The win was a particularly poignant one for the family as just six weeks ago the pony underwent surgery for a fungal infection. She came to HOYS to steal the win with just one week’s work under her belt.

Adam Wimbourne’s Daldorn Racing Bow had built on his experiences from last year’s show, when he was placed third, to claim this year’s title of Sandal BMW Intermediate Riding Type of the Year having won the exceeding 153cm section earlier in the day.

In the other intermediate class of the day, it was a dream come true for Sally Ann Cowley’s Miracle Mickey ridden by Sofia Scott, as he scooped the Guy Fawkes III Intermediate Show Hunter of the Year Championship.

Meanwhile, Annandale Darcy, owned by S Lobb and F Dymond, took the Carrs BMW Lead Rein of Hunter Type of the Year ridden by Victoria Dymond.
