A tiny orphaned foal at The Mare and Foal Sanctuary in Devon has found solace in a giant teddy bear.
Breeze, a Dartmoor Hill Pony, was found by a concerned farmer on Dartmoor last month. He was just a few hours old but his mother was nowhere to be seen, and he was suffering from shock and dehydration.
When the team from the Mare and Foal Sanctuary arrived, he had collapsed. Staff set about getting the little foal warm before bringing him back to the sanctuary, where he was placed on a saline drip and given crucial colostrum drips, milk and medication.
Breeze is now being cared for round the clock at the Sanctuary’s Honeysuckle Farm in Newton Abbot.
The Sanctuary has a unique method of providing comfort to abandoned foals like Breeze - giant cuddly toys.
"Sadly, little Breeze has not got his mum around to keep him company and although his carers here at the Sanctuary work around the clock to look after him, it’s not quite the same," said Syra Bowden, Executive Director at the Sanctuary. “As a result, we always give our orphaned foals a giant cuddly toy as a companion; they’re just like human babies in the way it provides them with comfort."
With Breeze being the second abandoned foal to have arrived at the Sanctuary in the past month, they are now appealing for people to donate further giant teddy bears to help. If you have an oversized soft toy going spare, take it to one of the Sanctuary’s charity stores.
